Shopping lists

A family shopping list that updates on everyone phone

Not a list one person keeps while everyone else just looks at it. In Specsy the whole household adds to it, and whoever is passing a shop does the buying. Every change shows up at once.

Why a family list usually does not work

It is normally one of three problems: only one person can edit the list, the app is not on everyone phone, or the entries are written too loosely — "milk", when what was meant was a specific one, or the lactose free kind.

So the list stops being current very quickly, and calls and messages from the shop reduce its usefulness to nothing.

A family list that works has to be shared, update for everyone at once, and carry enough detail to buy everything from it without further questions.

What makes a list clear to someone else

  • The exact product, not just a category — not "milk", but "lactose free milk, 1 L"
  • The quantity — so nobody buys too much or too little
  • Who added it — in case something needs checking
  • A photo — for anything easy to mix up
  • The shop — if the product is not sold everywhere

Ticking off in real time is the part that matters

When several people are shopping, the list has to update straight away. The moment one person ticks an item off, everyone else sees it — and nobody buys the same thing twice.

It works the same way at home: the washing powder runs out, you add it to the list right there, and it is already on everyone elses phone before you have left the bathroom.

How a household usually starts

  1. Create one shared listStart with the ordinary weekly shop. Separate lists for trips, parties and other occasions can come later.
  2. Invite the adults firstLet the people who do most of the shopping work from one list. Everyone else can be added afterwards.
  3. Save the list as a templateOnce the weekly list is assembled, save it — next time it goes back in whole, with all its detail, instead of being written again.

Questions people ask

How many people can share one list?
