Shoes are the hardest thing to buy from memory
Shoes come in several sizing systems at once, and they do not always agree between brands. Add the sizes of a partner, children or parents, and holding it all in your head becomes close to impossible.
In a shop it is easy to end up in front of the right pair on sale, unable to remember: 39 or 40, UK 6 or 6.5, and how this brand actually fits.
That is why it helps to store not only the size but the foot length in centimetres. It is the clearest reference point, and it maps onto any size chart.

Measure once, use it from then on
A couple of minutes with a sheet of paper saves you from guessing every time you buy shoes.
- Measure in the evening — by the end of the day the foot is usually a little larger
- Stand on the paper with your full weight, do not measure sitting down
- Mark the heel and the longest toe — it is not always the big one
- Measure both feet and keep the larger number
- Write the real length on the card, with no room added
- Keep your usual allowance and fit notes as a separate line — so a year later it is still clear that 24.5 cm is the foot, not the foot plus room
Questions people ask
Why store foot length and not just the size?
Because length in centimetres is the only value that survives a change of brand or country. Most manufacturers publish a length to size chart, so with the number you can always work out the size.
Can I keep a childs size and see when it will change?
Yes. Add the date of measurement and a reminder, and Specsy will nudge you a few months later to measure again.
Does it convert sizes automatically?
